HISTORY
Meadowmont was built in 1999. The property was once part of the nineteenth century Barbee family plantation, which was sold to David St. Pierre DuBose and Valinda Hill DuBose in 1931. In 1933 the DuBose family built a home on the property which Mrs. DuBose named Meadowmont. The original 1,250 acres of the DuBose estate seeded several developments. Approximately 500 acres became The Oaks subdivision and the Chapel Hill Country Club, 435 acres became the Meadowmont subdivision, and several hundred additional acres were designated as a flood plain for a reservoir. Meadowmont today is composed of numerous distinct types of residences, walking trails and open community space, and Meadowmont Village’s numerous stores and restaurants.
As David St. Pierre DuBose was an engineering graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the family home and 27 acres of land around it were bequeathed to the University in the late 1980s. UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School built the Paul J. Rizzo Conference Center on this site, and the original DuBose family home continues to be used for both special University and private events.
Also located on the Rizzo Center property in Meadowmont is the Barbee Cemetery containing graves of the Barbee family and approximately 100 enslaved people. The University Commission on History, Race and a Way Forward is working with UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School to honor the enslaved people buried in the Barbee Cemetery and to recognize their role in the University’s development and that of the Chapel Hill community.
